What to Expect at Your First Cosmetic Appointment at Silk Clinical

A complete guide to your first visit, from consultation to treatment, so you know exactly what to expect.

By Shontelle Prasad, RN · Lead Cosmetic Injector · 5 February 2026

Walking into a cosmetic clinic for the first time can feel daunting. You might not know what to expect, what questions to ask, or whether the practitioner will pressure you into treatments you are not ready for. I understand those concerns completely, and I want to reassure you: your first appointment at Silk Clinical is designed to be comfortable, informative, and entirely pressure-free.

As a registered nurse, my priority is always your safety and satisfaction. Here is a step-by-step guide to your first visit so you know exactly what to expect from the moment you book to your follow-up appointment.

Step 1: Booking Your Appointment

All appointments at Silk Clinical are booked through our online booking system, Fresha. You can access it directly from our website or search for Silk Clinical on the Fresha app. The booking process is simple: select the treatment or consultation you are interested in, choose a date and time that works for you, and confirm your booking.

If you are unsure which treatment to book, you can select a general consultation. This gives us dedicated time to discuss your concerns and goals without any commitment to a specific treatment.

You will receive a confirmation email and a reminder before your appointment. If you need to reschedule, you can do so easily through Fresha.

Step 2: Arriving at the Clinic

Silk Clinical is located at 66 Victoria Street in Christchurch. When you arrive, you will find a welcoming, modern clinic environment designed to feel calm and professional. There is no need to arrive excessively early; five minutes before your appointment time is ideal.

If it is your first visit, there will be a brief intake form to complete. This covers basic contact details and medical history information. You are welcome to complete this digitally before your appointment if we have sent it through to you in advance.

Step 3: The Consultation

The consultation is the most important part of your first visit, and I dedicate generous time to it. This is a genuine conversation, not a sales pitch. Here is what we cover:

Medical History Review

Safety comes first. I will review your medical history, including any current medications, allergies, previous cosmetic treatments, and relevant health conditions. Certain medical conditions and medications can affect treatment suitability, and it is essential that I have a complete picture before recommending anything. Please be open and honest during this discussion; everything you share is confidential.

Skin and Facial Assessment

I will conduct a thorough assessment of your skin quality, facial structure, areas of concern, and overall tissue condition. This assessment helps me understand your unique anatomy and identify which treatments will be most effective for your specific concerns.

Goal Discussion

This is where I want to hear from you. What bothers you when you look in the mirror? What results are you hoping to achieve? Are there specific areas you want to address, or are you looking for general advice on maintaining your appearance?

There are no silly questions during this conversation. Whether you have been researching treatments for months or have no idea where to start, my role is to listen, educate, and guide you toward the best options.

Honest Recommendations

Based on your medical history, assessment, and goals, I will explain which treatments I recommend and why. Crucially, I will also tell you what I would not recommend and why. If a treatment is unlikely to deliver the results you are hoping for, I will say so. If I think a more conservative approach would serve you better, I will explain that reasoning.

I will also discuss realistic expectations. Cosmetic treatments can deliver wonderful improvements, but they have limitations. Setting honest expectations from the outset ensures you are genuinely satisfied with your results.

Step 4: Treatment Planning

If you decide to proceed with treatment (either on the day or at a future appointment), we will create a treatment plan together. This plan outlines:

  • The specific treatments recommended
  • The sequence and timing of treatments
  • Expected outcomes and timelines
  • Full pricing with no hidden costs
  • Any preparation required before treatment
  • Aftercare instructions

For some treatments, particularly injectables, it is possible to proceed on the same day as your consultation if you feel comfortable doing so. For others, such as skin tightening or more comprehensive treatment plans, I may recommend scheduling a separate appointment to allow adequate preparation time.

There is never any pressure to proceed on the day. If you want to go home, think it over, and come back another time, that is completely fine.

Step 5: During Treatment

When it is time for your treatment, I will walk you through every step before and during the procedure. You will know exactly what I am doing, why I am doing it, and what you should expect to feel.

All injectable and device-based treatments at Silk Clinical are performed by registered nurses. This is not something we outsource or delegate to unqualified staff. Your safety and the quality of your results depend on the skill and training of the person performing your treatment, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Depending on the treatment, I may take clinical photographs (with your consent) for your medical record. These photos are invaluable for tracking your progress and refining your treatment plan over time.

Step 6: Aftercare

Before you leave the clinic, I will provide clear aftercare instructions specific to your treatment. These instructions cover everything you need to know about what to do (and what to avoid) in the hours and days following your treatment.

For injectable treatments, aftercare is typically straightforward: avoid touching or pressing on the treated areas, stay upright for a few hours, skip intense exercise for 24 hours, and avoid excessive heat or alcohol on the day of treatment.

For device-based treatments like RF or HIFU, aftercare may include specific skincare recommendations, sun protection guidance, and information about what to expect as your skin heals and responds to treatment.

You will also receive written aftercare instructions so you have a reference at home. And if you have any questions or concerns after your appointment, you are always welcome to contact us.

Step 7: Follow-Up

Follow-up is an integral part of the Silk Clinical experience. For most treatments, I will schedule a review appointment (typically two weeks after injectables) to assess your results, make any adjustments if needed, and discuss next steps.

This follow-up appointment is included as part of your treatment. It gives us the opportunity to ensure you are completely happy with your results and to refine your treatment plan based on how your body has responded.

A Word for Nervous First-Timers

If you are feeling anxious about your first appointment, please know that you are not alone. Many of our most loyal patients were nervous before their first visit. The cosmetic industry can feel intimidating from the outside, but at Silk Clinical, we have built an environment that prioritises your comfort and confidence.

You are in control at every stage. You can ask as many questions as you like, take as much time as you need, and say no to anything that does not feel right for you. My job is to provide expert guidance and quality treatment, not to convince you to do something you are not comfortable with.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. You do not need a referral to book an appointment at Silk Clinical. You can book directly through Fresha at any time.

How long does the first appointment take?

Allow approximately 45 minutes to one hour for your first visit. This includes the consultation, any paperwork, and treatment if you choose to proceed on the day. Subsequent appointments are typically shorter as we will already have your history on file.

Can I bring someone with me?

Of course. You are welcome to bring a friend or family member for support. Many first-time patients find it reassuring to have someone familiar with them, and we are happy to accommodate that.

What if I decide not to go ahead with treatment?

That is perfectly fine. There is no obligation and no charge for changing your mind. A consultation at Silk Clinical is about providing you with information and expert advice. Whether you proceed straight away, come back later, or decide cosmetic treatment is not for you, we respect your decision completely.

Is the consultation free?

Consultation fees vary depending on the type and duration of appointment. Any consultation fee is clearly displayed on our Fresha booking page, and if you proceed with treatment on the same day, the consultation fee is typically applied toward your treatment cost. We are always transparent about pricing, so there are no surprises.

Volnewmer RF Skin Tightening

South Island Exclusive

The only Volnewmer in the South Island

Volnewmer is the only monopolar RF skin-tightening device in the South Island. We use it for skin laxity, fine lines, and overall textural tone. It is the skin-quality envelope around most of the other work we do, and worth a conversation if skin tightening is on your mind.

Ultraformer MPT HIFU

Latest Generation HIFU

Lift the SMAS layer, not just the surface

Ultraformer MPT is the latest generation of HIFU technology. It targets the SMAS layer, the same plane addressed in a surgical facelift, with focused ultrasound. The result is a non-surgical lift that pairs naturally with RF skin tightening and with injectables.
